I can recall the movies that scared me when I was a kid.
I went/with a friend to see Ben. The sequal to Willard. Nope...didn't scare us at all. But it was a double feature with The Night of the Living Dead. Damn we were in like 5th ot 6th grade. It scared the hell out of us. AND we had to ride our bicycles home in different directions. When The Exorcist first came out even the commercials freaked me out. A slow tracking close up of the bedroom door. I was a kid remember. When I actually saw the movie (we were Catholic school kids so we all saw it) it was no where near as frightening as the idea of what was behind that door. Then Behind the Door came out. With the Nanny from Nanny and the Professor posessed by demons. That commercial was kinda scarey. Remember Let's Scare Jessica To Death ? Those whispery vampires that lived in the lake or whatever saying "Jessica...Jessica....Jessica." Creeped me out. Like a bad acid trip. The first The Evil Dead was creepy because it was so low budget. The latter ones more comedic than scarey. These days ? I didn't like Hostel. I actually felt dirty for watching it. Wolf's Creek was so slow in the beginning I just got annoyed with it. And once the violence began I didn't care about the characters that much. The new Hills Have Eyes was ok...But it needed that odd looking bald guy in it. I watcged an independant horror film yesterday. Subject Two. It's like a Frankenstien ripoff. It was kind of slow paced and different but very slow. It was more of a "let's see how many different ways the evil doc can kill the young guy" movie than anything else. |

WOW u9! I remember all of those too..
I agree with the Hostel
"dirty" feeling & Subject two was indeed a strange one. I have enjoyed quite a few independent releases & have some favs in my collection.
One of my childhood memories of "scary" movies was watchin - Abbot & Costello meet Frankenstein (had Drac & Wolfman in it too). It was projected on one of the big hanging doors to the grain elevator in Eldena, IL. All of us little neighborhood kids would come & spread blankets on the ground, eat popcorn & creep out! There are only like
umm 20? houses in this "town" lol, so our outdoor movie nights were a real treat. We also saw various others like John Wayne, Laurel & Hardy
& cartoons.
I too was scared by Night of the Living dead (now I'm a MAJOR Zombi-freak). Think it warped my lil brain! lol

Ah the old Abbott and Costello movies. They must've churned those films out weekly. I recall on local channel 5 here in Phoenix they used to show those movies every Saturday. Channel 5 was too cheap to have cartoons so they used to have monster theater at noon. Never scarey. But I loved monsters when I was young. |
